Tax documents needed to start preparing your 2026 return

• New dependents: Social Security card and birth certificate
• Bank information: Routing and account numbers for direct deposit (paper refund checks are being phased out by the IRS)
• Income: W-2s, 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-INT/DIV, SSA-1099, 1099-R, capital gains/losses, year-end brokerage 1099 summary
• Rental property: Income and expenses
• Schedule C: Gross income and a written record of expenses related to operating your business
• Self-employment taxes: Estimated tax payments (amounts and dates)
• Education: Form 1098-T
• ID: New or renewed driver’s license or government ID
• Mortgage interest + property taxes: Form 1098 and tax statements
• Digital assets: All sales, exchanges, or receipts — every taxpayer must answer the IRS digital asset question for 2026
• Itemized deductions: Written records and receipts of eligible expenses
• Foreign earned income: Dates you were outside the U.S. during 2026
• Foreign sourced income: All income in U.S. dollars from foreign sources
• Tax credits: We may request additional documentation for EIC, CTC, ACTC, ODC, AOTC, or Head of Household
